Dryland Training Objectives
Dryland Training 1: At the Boathouse. General session for all new members (Saturday afternoon)
Trainees are introduced to the club:
- About safety, sailing clothing and footwear
- About our focus on safety - on and off the water
- How a sailboat moves, turns using tacks and gybes and, the five points of sail
- SailONEC is a volunteer-based club; there are a range of ways to volunteer
- The layout of the boathouse, dock area, facilities, boats and the location of CL16 equipment
- The use of the tag board, log book, weather radio, and emergency equipment
- Sailing knots: bowline, figure eight, double figure eight, round turn and two half hitches
- About going for an introductory sail - weather permitting *Dress appropriately for wet spray & the cold while on the water
Dryland Training 2: At the Boathouse (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Trainees learn:

To wear a life jacket when on the dock or in a boat at all times

How to rig and derig a CL16

What equipment should be on a CL16.
- Terms: port, starboard, Elvstrom bailer, flotation tanks, centerboard, rudder, tiller, painter, sheet, bow
- If the weather permits, we may go for an introductory sail. Dress appropriately for wet spray and cool weather.

On-the Water Training Objectives
Module 1 - Rigging and First Sail: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Trainees learn:
- What to check for in selecting a boat
- How to rig and unrig a CL16
- The basic boat equipment: sails (main, jib, battens, rudder, tiller, paddles, whisker pole)
- The items to check in each boat: hand bailer, closed elvstrom bailers, closed scuppers, secure hiking straps, flotation tanks and safety equipment
- To launch a CL16 and paddle without a rudder from the bow and stern
- How to balance a boat and move around in it
- Safety measures, including: wearing Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), rigging the rescue boat, weather hazards and what to do in the event of a capsize
Trainees review: knots, weather radio, tag board use, emergency equipment,
and the location of CL16 equipment
Module 2 - Balancing, Control at the Helm: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Trainees learn:
- The skills of a crew on a CL16 (casting off, backwind the jib, dock the CL16, maintain a watch, help balance the boat, setting the jib and centerboard)
- To explain the ‘right-of-way’ rules and identify boats on a collision course
- Terms: outhaul, Cunningham, telltales, battens, tiller extension, chainplate, bearings, transom
Trainees review: CL16 boat selection, safety, pre-checks for the CL16,
launching and paddling the CL16, going ‘head to wind’, rigging the CL16
Module 3 - At the Helm: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Trainees learn:
- To take the helm and sail in moderate wind on a ‘close-haul’ and ‘beam reach’ course
- How to tack the boat from ‘close hauled’ to ‘close hauled’
- How to steer the boat in a straight line, using a stationary shore bearing
- To use and explain tell tales, shore and water-based wind indicators
- To set the sails and steer for a ‘close hauled’ and a ‘beam reach’ course
- To give clear commands to crew
- How to bring the boat ‘head to wind’ and to get ‘out of irons’
- Terms: in irons, close-hauled, close- reach, beam reach, beating, astern, forward, head up
Laser Trainees learn:
- The location of Laser equipment and gear
- Pre-checks, draining and launching the Laser
- Laser rigging (trainer will work with trainees to teach rigging procedure)
- How to cast off, tack, gybe, and dock the boat
- How to unrig and stow Laser equipment and gear
Trainees review: CL16 boat selection, safety, pre-checks for the CL16,
launching and paddling the CL16, going ‘head to wind’, rigging the CL16
Module 4 - Sailing All Points of Sail: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Albacore Trainees learn:
- To dock a CL16 while at the helm
- To sail the boat on a ‘broad reach’ and ‘run’ (if wind conditions permit)
- To gybe the boat in a safe and controlled manner
- To give preparatory and final comments to crew on ‘gybing’
- To instruct the crew on proper placement of centerboard and sails for ‘broad reach’ and ‘run’
- As crew, ‘set’ and ‘douse’ a whisker pole (as weather conditions permit)
- The location of stowed Laser equipment and gear
- To rig and unrig a Laser and stow gear
Note: at this point the trainee should be able to check out as Crew
Trainees review: CL16 boat selection, safety, pre-checks and launching the CL16,
docking and rigging the CL16, rights-of-way rules, ‘close-hauled’ and ‘beam reach’ points of sail, the ‘hove-to’ position, reading the wind (tell-tales, flags, smoke, other sail boats), and docking
Module 5 - Capsize Drills: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Albacore and Laser Trainees learn:
- To capsize and right a capsized boat (Albacore and Laser)
- To describe four ways to avoid a capsize
- To explain the dangers of hypothermia and the basic first aid steps for treating it
- To explain the legal responsibilities of a Skipper
- To explain the dangers of a ‘lee shore’ and ‘sailing by the lee’
- Define: leeway, beam, transom, cleat, sailing-by-the-lee, fairlead, whisker pole
Trainees review: Safety (rescue boats, “all return signal” of two long blasts of the horn, designated training area, weather hazards, what to do in the event of capsize, pre-checks, rigging and launching an Albacore, docking, rights of way, all points-of-sail, gybing and reading the wind (tell-tales, flags, smoke, other sail boats)
Trainees practice: unrigginga CL16/Laser, stowing gear and hanging sails, unrigging rescue boats
Module 6 - Man Overboard Drills: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
Albacore and Laser Trainees will:
- Learn to rescue a man overboard in a safe and efficient manner
- Be able to try a sail theory test administered by the Rear Commodore, Head Trainer or other examiner
- Have the opportunity to practice unrigging and CL16 and Laser, stowing gear and hanging sails, unrigging the rescue boats
Trainees review: Capsize procedure, methods of avoiding capsize, measures to avoid hypothermia, signs and symptoms of hypothermia, first aid for hypothermia
Trainees practice: man overboard drill, sailing preset courses (such as a figure eight or triangle) and docking
Module 7 - Review and Practice Sailing Skills: (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm, Saturday at 10am)
There are no specific objectives for this module. Trainees are encouraged to practice, take the crew and skipper (Albacore and Laser) tests and the sailing theory test.
Trainees practice: man overboard drills, capsize drills, tacking and gybing, the ‘hove-to’ position, all points-of-sail with correct sail and centerboard adjustments
