Dress for the weather
Every day
- Wear a PFD or a lifejacket.
- Footwear – running shoes or sailing shoes will reduce slipping, and provide some protection for your feet. Sandals and bare feet are not good choices.
- Take a tie-cord for glasses.
- Wear polypropolene or similar underwear and wool clothing to provide warmth.
- Wear a hat or wool toque to keep your head warm - much body heat is lost through your head.
- Bring a windbreaker.
- Wear rain gear: it keeps you dry and cuts the wind.
- Bring a complete change of clothes and a towel to the boathouse.
- Avoid fleece: it is cold and heavy when wet. Not a good choice for sailors.
- Try a wetsuit and neoprene booties: they improve your odds if you capsize in cold water, and they are also warm on cold days.
Hot and Sunny Days
- Dress lightly but beware of overexposure.
- Wear cotton -- a poor choice in cold weather, but OK when it is hot.
- Use sun block, or wear long sleeves and a hat.
- Take drinking water.
What not to wear
- Watches which are not water proof
- Jeweler, bracelets, and large earrings
- Wallets, loose change, and identification – if you carry ID keep it in a water proof container.
