Steering Committee

SailONEC is run by its members under the direction of a steering committee.

Sailing Director. The Sailing Director is an elected member of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club executive who has overall responsibility for the sailing program on ONEC. The Sailing Director is assisted by a steering committee, each member of which has specific responsibilities.

Racing Commodore.  The Racing Commodore acts as the Deputy Sailing Director and has specific responsibility for organizing a racing program and a racing school for club members. In this he/she may be assisted by other members of the club and by the Head Instructor.

Fleet Captain. The Fleet Captain has general responsibility the maintenance of the sailing fleet and for the acquisition and disposal sailing equipment. In carrying out these duties the Fleet Captain is assisted by the Deputy Fleet Captain may call on the assistance of members of the sailing club.

Bosun. The Bosun is responsible for the organization of the workshop and for the ordering of supplies.

Harbour Master. The Harbour Master has general responsibility for the construction and maintenance of docks which the responsibility of the sailing club. The Harbour Master also has responsibility for the maintenance of power boats owned by SailONEC. In carrying out these duties the Harbour Master may call on the assistance of members of the sailing club.

Head Trainer. The head trainer is responsible for establishing standards of instruction and for organizing the training of adult members. The head trainer, under the direction of the Sailing Director, will also provide guidance to, and support for, the Head Instructor (CYA) who will manage the sailing camp. In carrying out these duties the Head Trainer will call on the assistance of members of the sailing club.

Secretary keeps minutes of the steering committee meetings, and provides input into ONEC’s communications and publicity programs in cooperation with the ONEC Communications Director.

Social Coordinator The Social Coordinator organizes social events for the members of SailONEC

Communication/Publicity The Communications/Publicity Coordinator is responsible for communications including sailing’s contributions to the Tattler. He/she will also develop a publicity program for sailing in co-operation with the Communications Director of ONEC.

Membership The membership secretary will develop plans for building membership and will maintain membership lists in cooperation with the Club Manager.

Keelboat Co-ordinator.  The Keelboat Coordinator represents the interests of private boat owners within SailONEC.

Head Instructor. The head instructor is a certified Canadian Yachting Association instructor hired by the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club with responsibility for managing the Sailing Camp and for certifying adult members according to the Canadian Yachting Association White Sail training system. The head instructor will, during the period of his/her employment, be an ex officio member of the steering committee. 

The position of Sailing Director is filled by election to the executive of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club by the general membership of the club. Membership on the steering committee of SailONEC will be by nomination or election by the sailing members of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club.
